The new gravel beds are now producing good catches of trout and have already attracted significant numbers of wild fish.

Clearing the County School beat

Clearing the County School beat

Last summer (2021) we cleared the overgrown willows which were taking up much of the channel on the County School beat and causing excess silting. The next stage will be to look at ways of raising the bed, scouring the gravel and increasing the flow in selected areas.
Goff's beat

Goff's beat

Goff's is the lowest of the four beats on the fishery and contains some of the deepest water as well as some of the largest trout. It is not as easily accessible as the other beats, but stile and bank improvements over the winter should make it easier to get to. It's definitely worth the walk.

This photo shows a classic gravel spawning redd, cleared by trout ready for spawning. Anglers should take care when wading early and late in the season to minimise disturbance to such areas.
Clearing County School

Clearing County School

Heavy machinery was required to clear the willows which had grown into the river bed and virtually obscured some parts of the channel.

Kick sampling

Kick sampling

Kick sampling to survey small fish, insects and invertebrates in the river is a valuable way of measuring and monitoring fly life in the river. It provides early warning of pollution and water deterioration.
Downstream of County School bridge

Downstream of County School bridge

Probably one of the most prolific spots on the County School beat is the section below the bridge. Good casting is required, but trout are usually there to be caught
Increasing the flow

Increasing the flow

The clearance work at County School has resulted in a good stock of large woody debris which will be used to create flow deflectors like this one on the Yarrow farm beat. They will speed up the flow and hopefully scour out new gravel areas.
